So you want to cosplay in the UK?

Our overseas intelligence officer Cassis gives us and inside look at conventions happening in the United Kingdom!

HOW TO COSPLAY IN THE UK

1) What are some basic rules to follow at UK events?
There dosn't seem to be too many rules in the UK- probably because the scene is still relatively small compared to US or Japan. Common stuff like be nice to people, don't glomp or hit people with certain paddles, etc seem to be the rules, but they don't have stuff like change at site etc like Japan.

2) What are some common mistakes you see being made?
I do wish people wouldn't do what I call "Run by shooting" where you are posing for a photo for someone who has asked, and someone else runs by and takes a picture at a highly unflattering angle and you aren't even facing them. And proceed to post it on the internets. Also, please wear make up. You have a pretty good costume but still look like "you" rather than the chara because you don't have any on... ^^;

3) If you have ever cosplayed in Japan, what is your impression on western style conventions verses Japanese conventions.
I cosplayed in TGS in '06, I was impressed by the photographers and how polite, respectful and passionate they were about it. Also large changing facilities always makes me happy.

4) Have you ever had a chance to meet foreign cosplayers in the UK? Do any come to your events?
It seems alot of them do, I have met quite a few Japanese layers and also guys from Europe.

5) What is the level of cosplay like in the UK?
Low to Medium. It's still starting out, sure there are usually 2-3 really amazing costumes in larger cons but in general it is still growing.

6) What series are popular right now to cosplay?
If I go by the last large con I went to, Miku Hatsune (Yes, just her) is the next big thing. Maybe the other Vocaloids will follow?

7) Any other information you would like to share?
UK is looking like a promising country who are slowly catching up to other big cosplaying countries, it's getting more and more popular and the level is going up too. Now, if we could get some half decent guests at events that would be awesome....
